Start Carpooling at Your School Today, No Sign-Off Required

For a long time, our standard answer to "how do I get my school on Carpool.School?" was "ask your administrator."
That's where most parents stopped.
A parent would find us, want to coordinate rides with the families they already knew, sign up, and we'd ask them to wait while their school's administrator signed off. The administrator was busy. The parent moved on.
That story repeated enough times that we changed how the platform works.
Any parent, any school, sixty seconds
Now, any parent can start a community for their school without permission from anyone.
You sign up. You find your school in our directory. (Or you add it if it's not there yet: schools, preschools, daycares, camps, after-school programs, sub-groups inside a school. Anywhere parents need to coordinate.) You become the community's first member. You share an invite link with the families you already know. They share with theirs.
The community grows on its own.
We call this a parent-led community.
Two flavors of community
Schools, districts, and any K-12 org with a parent roster (camps, daycares, after-school programs) can still set up verified communities the traditional way: they upload their roster, we send each family a personal invite link, and the community is marked Verified. By definition, every parent in it has been roster-checked. That path still exists, and for organizations ready to roll out across all families at once, it's the higher-leverage option.
But parent-led is the path that unblocks every other case. It's for the parent who's ready to start now with a few families they already know. It's for the magnet school whose families come from across the county and have no shared neighborhood. It's for the summer camp that exists for nine weeks and doesn't have a roster to upload.
If you're in any of those situations: you don't have to convince anyone of anything. You can start now.
How families join the community you start
Two options, you pick:
- Invite link (or access code). A shareable URL that taps straight into signup. The easiest path for the parents you text every day. The same link carries a short access code you can share on its own (drop it in a newsletter, mention it at pickup). Rotate it any time from your admin view.
- Open enrollment. Anyone whose kid is at the school can join freely. No link, no code. Best for a high-trust community where you want zero friction for the next family that hears about you.
You can flip between these from your admin view. Most communities start with the invite link and only consider open enrollment after they're established.
What stays private
Every Carpool.School community is gated. Parents in your community can find each other. Parents outside your community cannot. Phone numbers don't get shared until two families connect. Exact addresses don't get shared at all; we use proximity for matching, not coordinates.
The platform's job is to make matching warm and the privacy default. Parent-led doesn't change that. It just removes the institutional gate.
To start
Sign up as a parent, or download the app and sign up there. Find your school in the directory (or add it if it isn't listed yet), then share the invite link with the families you already know.
The carpooling starts as soon as a second family joins.
